A-List Guitar CV Configuration

I'm trying to get a template created that will allow me to make custom phrases using the cv note/gate input on the A-list device and control them using a keyboard. I'm not sure how to describe this configuration but the manual for this RE has a description:

The CV/Gate input on the rear panel of Acoustic Guitarist interprets notes differently the the MIDI Input. Notes from C#1 to C#5 don't select phrases and chords, but individual slices of which are laid out across the note range.

You can use this feature to create your own phrases by triggering "slices" (which are individual strums extracted from the original performance). Try it with a Matrix pattern sequencer!

Note that this just replaces the phrase section - you will still need to send chord notes via MIDI Input to get the guitarist strumming away!

The way I try and understand this is the rhythm of the phrase is generated by some external engine/arpeggiator and the notes are delivered via the MIDI input to the instrument. Any pointers on how to configure this patch is appreciated.

Welcome! Why just try what the manual says and from there you might get a better idea how the CV works in it. Also maybe someone that has it might be able to offer some insight?

I was able to make some headway but still more questions than answers at this point...

Here's the config that has created the best results:

Matrix Sequencer cv-note -> A-List cv-note
Matrix Sequencer cv-gate -> A-list cv-gate

Keyboard routing MIDI -> A-List

On the Matrix select one of the empty patterns in an available bank. Enter notes in any of the note locations -- I did this looping four notes initially to limit the number of degrees for error -- nearby notes/slices are typically related and many of them are "grace note" slices that don't generate much sound -- initially find one that works and adjust after you have constructed a pattern to make any sequence of sounds.

The matrix will send slice selections to the A-List over the CV connections, but a keyboard is required to trigger the correct chord information to the RE -- one problem I discovered is the gate has to match the chosen slice sufficiently to get any sound -- I had to play with the swing and feel dials to get some of the sounds to work. The matrix doesn't deliver "ties" unless the preceding note/gate value is identical so it takes a while to tweak for best effect. Once I was happy with sequence I would copy paste this into another available pattern/bank and adjust it slightly to provide variations on a theme.

Also the timing for the matrix was key to this success. If you choose too small of a note value per step (say 1/16T) you might not allow enough time for the slice to generate a sound -- also if you're playing a patch with 1/8 note slices on mismatched groove (e.g. 1/8T) some of the slices will likely drop out.

Questions for the community:

I am having some difficulty in saving this configuration so all elements of the patch are reproduced when reloaded from disk -- what is stored with the files and what do I need to work around lossy persistence with respect to song titles?

Are there better tools for providing this same behavior? Has anyone in the community tested both RGRE and A-List products and have a comparative review?

I was initially very happy with the A-List RE, but wanted to be able to provide my own phrases rather than lean on the stock catalog -- the initial sense is that the matrix->a-list will provide a pretty good catalog of permutations -- wishing it allowed me to offer my own slices which would make it a lot more flexible with respect to customization.

Just reply to the thread if you have questions.

hello I tried some experiences about your description and you are right it's verry difficult to get something realy precise. I suggest you try with other sequencer then the Matrix .
