Basically you want to have a Signal (in most cases the Kick drum) that triggers a compressor. Every time the Signal is played, the compressor will reduce the sound that its applied to in volume. Now you can use the compressors settings to change the effect. To get that very strong pumping effect you should have a low threshold, high ratio, low attack and high release.
