Out and in problem?

Hi,

Please try and help me here if you can :)

I use Reason 7.1 on Steinberg UR22 and I am trying to do something a bit special.
I'd like to take an instrument out of Output1, into a hardware effect and then back into Reason again on Input2, so I can put reveb, delay and stuff on it.

This sort of works but the problem is I can always hear my original sound, because I put it out on Out1

What I would like to do, is play an instrument without hearing it in headphones, only put it out of Out1 and then work with the input.
The active input and output in the preferences is greyed out.

Don't know if you have any idea what I am trying to tell :D

But i'd like to play it live, for jamming and composing.
Is it posible with a sound card with more outputs, or is Reason always playing the instrument on the outputs inside the DAW ?

I think you shoudl just get an UR44 in my opinion, since it is catered for paralell channels going in and out. I have one and love it.

So ye to anwser your last question it is possible. I have it set up by default as auxillery, but i can easily switch between direct and aux.

Ok so on UR44 I can send an instrument out on Line Out 1 and into Line In 5, without hearing the sound when playing.
I want to hear the sound only when is has been out through my small stone phaser, that's my problem now.

with an ur 44 or any 4 in 4 out interface you can have an additional stereo or 2 mono in and outs next to the existing one, meaning you can send out any soource true the other outputs in the UR44´s case 3&4 and then route them back in in real time (latency will differ according to buffer settings) thus giving you what you want.

If you desire using outboard gear next to you daw, really get at least a 4 in 4 out interface.

Ok, sounds good, I think I have to get one of those.
...a shame because I could live with, not using Out 1 or 2 on my UR22 as a real output, because I use head phones and generates the final result internally, but it dosn't seems to be possible :(

what i used to do is, hook up output 1 and 2 to the device you want to use, the devices output the to your speakers. Listen to what it sounds, dial in the settings and then plug the outputs of the device in your soundcards input, then record it..

In practise.. it is just to much of a workaround and more annoying then fun so you'll hardly do it..

Another option, get a patchbay and link two channels, with some smart cabling you can split a source and have the same signal going to your speakers as to your soundcard.

I did it with mine for a while (using a behriner patchpro) but it gave me a bit of noise.. which was highly annoying. So i chucked that out of the window when i finally got my UR44.

Really, if you wanna work with outboard gear, get one.

If you use several units, get a patchbay as well. Saves a **** ton of time and headaches :p

I just realised that UR44 i a bit overkill and expensive for me, since I max use 1 microfone and most for fun stuff. So I will look for a smaller version with inserts.
I am very satisfied with the ASIO drivers on the Steinberg UR22, so I hope others have good drivers too. Any experience with these models and Reason?

you need at least 4 outputs, and i dont think ive seen decent interface´s with 2 in and 4 out´s, its mostly 4x4
